Family life is full of love, support, and shared experiences, but it’s also true that families go through tough times. At Vitality Collective, we understand the importance of strong family bonds and are here to help families navigate challenges with compassion, understanding, and professional guidance. Whether you're in Vancouver, Chilliwack, Surrey, or prefer virtual counselling sessions, family therapy is a valuable resource for healing and growth.

What is family counselling?

Family counselling is a therapeutic approach in which a BC therapist works with family members to address issues affecting their relationships and overall dynamics. This type of therapy is designed to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and promote healthier interactions within your family unit. It involves open conversations in a safe, non-judgmental space where everyone’s voice is heard.

At Vitality Collective, our therapists are trained to work with all types of families, whether you're dealing with parenting challenges, teen behaviour issues, marital difficulties, or the aftermath of trauma or loss. Family counselling can benefit anyone in a family system, including parents, children, and extended family members.

Who is family counselling for?

Whether your family lives under one roof or is spread across different homes, virtual therapy makes it possible to come together—no matter the structure of your family. Family therapy can support a wide range of family systems, including:

  • Parents and children (nuclear families): If your household is facing frequent arguments, parenting struggles, or challenges with child behaviour, therapy can offer guidance and new strategies for connection.

  • Blended and stepfamilies: Adjusting to new dynamics after remarriage or combining households can be tough. Family therapy offers a space to work through those changes and build mutual respect.

  • Extended families and caregivers: Grandparents, aunts, uncles, or others involved in daily life may benefit from counselling that brings clarity to roles, expectations, and communication.

  • Families experiencing big life changes: Whether you're navigating a move, grief, separation, or illness, therapy helps your family adapt and process the impact together.

  • When mental health is part of the picture: If one or more family members is managing depression, anxiety, substance use, or other mental health concerns, therapy helps everyone understand how to support each other and set healthy boundaries.

  • Families with children or teens: Struggles with school, peer relationships, identity, or emotional regulation can affect the whole family. Therapy helps you move through it as a team.

  • When connection feels strained: If your family is feeling emotionally distant, overwhelmed by conflict, or unsure how to talk to one another, therapy provides tools to rebuild trust and understanding.

  • Navigating cultural or generational gaps: Differing values, traditions, or expectations can create friction between generations. Our culturally informed counsellors can help families find common ground.

What can family counselling help with?

Family therapy can address a wide variety of issues that can impact the well-being of family members. For example, parenting issues are one of the most common reasons families seek therapy. Parenting can be difficult, and disagreements or misunderstandings between parents and children are common. Family counselling can provide guidance on creating healthy boundaries, improving communication, and navigating difficult parenting moments, especially during adolescence.

Family counselling can also help resolve conflicts between family members who may struggle to communicate effectively or resolve disagreements. Your therapist works to identify underlying causes of conflict, teaches healthy communication skills, and provides strategies for resolving disputes in a calm and constructive way.

For families dealing with behavioural problems, such as a child or adolescent displaying challenging behaviours like aggression, withdrawal, or defiance, family therapy helps identify the root causes and offers solutions for addressing these behaviours constructively.

Additionally, divorce or separation can be emotionally taxing for everyone involved. Family counselling helps children and parents adjust to new family dynamics, work through feelings of loss or anger, and maintain healthy relationships post-separation. Therapy also provides valuable support when families experience trauma or grief, offering a space to grieve together, understand each other’s emotions, and begin the healing process.

When it comes to blended families, adjusting to life in a new family structure can be complex, especially when it comes to parenting stepchildren or blending different parenting styles. Family counselling can help navigate these changes and foster strong, positive relationships between all family members.

Addiction or mental health challenges within the family can also be difficult to manage. Family counselling helps family members understand the impact of these struggles, teaches coping strategies, and assists in creating a supportive environment for everyone involved.

What happens during family counselling?

At Vitality Collective, our family counselling sessions are designed to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where every family member can be heard. Whether you’re attending in-person in Chilliwack or accessing care online from anywhere in BC, our therapists are here to support your family with compassion and clarity.

The process typically begins with an intake session, where your therapist will explore your family’s history, dynamics, and the specific challenges you’re facing. This initial conversation helps lay the foundation for therapy by identifying key patterns and building a tailored approach for your family.

From there, your therapist will help you set shared goals, such as reducing conflict, rebuilding trust, or improving how you communicate. Sessions are interactive, guided conversations where everyone is encouraged to speak openly and respectfully.

Our therapists draw from a variety of evidence-based techniques depending on your family’s needs. These may include:

  • Family systems therapy

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)

  • Solution-focused strategies

  • Role-playing and communication exercises

To help make progress between sessions, you may be given practical exercises to try at home—tools to help shift dynamics, build new habits, and encourage connection in daily life.

Sessions are typically held weekly or biweekly, lasting between 50 and 90 minutes, and may occasionally involve one-on-one check-ins with individual family members when helpful to the process.

Family therapy is not about assigning blame—it’s about working as a team to better understand one another, resolve tension, and strengthen your connection.

How do you know when you need family therapy?

Knowing when to seek family counselling can be challenging, but there are signs that suggest it could be helpful. For instance, frequent arguments or strained relationships between family members are common indicators that family therapy might be needed. When communication becomes difficult or unproductive, it often leads to frustration, resentment, and emotional distance. Family counselling in Vancouver, Surrey, Chilliwack, or online can help address these issues and improve communication and conflict resolution.

If your family is experiencing unresolved trauma or grief, therapy can provide a space to process those emotions together. If you’re dealing with life transitions such as a move, divorce, or remarriage, family counselling can help your family adjust and build new connections in a healthy way.

Parenting challenges are another major reason families seek therapy. If you’re finding it hard to manage challenging behaviours from your child or teenager, or if you’re having trouble agreeing with your co-parent, family therapy can offer support and guidance to improve your parenting skills and overall family functioning.

If any of these signs resonate with your family, it might be time to explore family counselling in Vancouver, Surrey, Chilliwack, or online. Therapy can offer valuable support, help restore harmony, and strengthen your family’s emotional health.
